The freedom to read is essential to our democracy.

It begins with this timeless observation:
FREEDOM WRITERS BOOK NOTES FREE
Seventy years ago, leaders from across the literary world joined together in writing to condemn attacks on free expression. The statement at the heart of that endeavor, the Freedom to Read Statement, was authored by the American Library Association and Association of American Publishers over a period of several days. Unite Against Book Bans, the coalition of organizations fighting censorship, which includes SLJ, is asking individuals, authors, organizations, and associations to sign on to the statement and support the freedom to read. When republishing the statement on June 25, 2023, ALA and AAP were joined by the Authors Guild and American Booksellers Association. On the 70th anniversary of the Freedom to Read Statement from the American Library Association (ALA) and the Association of American Publishers (AAP) -and in response to the current wave of censorship -ALA and AAP have reissued the statement and reaffirmed its message.
